The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has issued a statement expressing concern over the recent anti-government protests in Kenya, which have resulted in loss of lives and injuries.
In a statement released on July 26, IMF Director of Communications Julie Kozack conveyed the organization’s condolences to those affected by the turmoil.
The IMF acknowledged the challenges facing Kenya, including austerity measures that has strained taxpayers, and reiterated its commitment to working with the government to achieve robust, sustainable, and inclusive economic growth.
“We are deeply concerned about the tragic events in Kenya and saddened by the loss of lives and injuries. Our thoughts are with all those affected,” Julie Kozack said.
“The IMF is closely monitoring the situation in Kenya and remained committed to supporting the country in overcoming its economic challenges and improving the well-being of its people.”
The statement came amid accusations by Kenyans that the IMF has burdened the government with loans, leading to austerity measures that has strained taxpayers.
The IMF has maintained that its goal is to help Kenya overcome its economic challenges and improve its economic prospects.
The protests, which began on July 20, had called for President William Ruto’s government to address rising living costs, corruption, and other economic issues.
