The International Centre for Investigative Reporting (ICIR) has concluded a 3-day training capacity for journalists in various newsrooms across the country.
The capacity programme was held in Abuja, from Tuesday to Thursday.
The 3-day capacity programme titled “countering misinformation and discountering misinformation” was cosponsored by the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Abuja.
The training was organised to equip journalists with Fact-Check and Data driven reporting skills.
At the training, participants were exposed to various critical newsroom and social media issues as well as identifying and combating misinformation on social media.
The facilitators tutored participants on how to use fact-checking tools to identify false information on social media. Some of the tools include Google Reverse Image, InVid, Google Earth Pro, YouTube Data, Adobe Premiere Pro, and others.
The Executive Director of ICIR, Dayo Aiyetan who was represented by, the Editor, of FactCheckHub Opeyemi Kehinde, in his welcome address, advised participants to develop their newsrooms with skills and knowledge obtained from the capacity programme.
He urged participants to continue the propagation against misinformation and fake news on social media.
The representative of the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Abuja, Matthias Dold also encouraged journalists to curtail the spread of fake news across Nigeria newsrooms.
Mr Dold advised participants to use the media to strengthen the democracy of Nigeria.
He also encouraged the journalists to continue developing themselves professionally in order to promote fact-checking in newsrooms.
The German representative urged participants to leverage on modern technology to fight against misinformation.
