IBM Haruna: Declaration of State of Emergency a Fanciful Idea

Former Federal Commissioner for Information and Culture, Ibrahim Bata Malgwi Haruna spoke in an interview on Monday during The Morning Show about Senator Mao Ohuabunwa saying President Muhammadu Buhari should declare a state of emergency.

Major General Haruna (rtd) said that the declaration of state of emergency doesn’t make a change, that the government is to do what they’re supposed to do whether they’re in an emergency or not.

“What you’re supposed to do whether you’re in an emergency or not is to secure the wellbeing of the people, the declaration doesn’t make a change.”

He believes that the proclamation of a state of emergency is merely a selling point and won’t have any significant effects beyond what would have happened had our resources been used appropriately.

“There’s nothing more elaborate the emergency declaration will bring other than the effect to which all our resources could have been put to if engaged properly.”

Haruna says that the arms of government which are the legislative, executive and judiciary should perform and continue to secure and maintain the confidence of the people.

In spite of the fact that security is given a high priority, other issues in the nation should not be ignored, he said.

He mentions other issues facing the nation, such as education, employment, production, and so forth, and suggests that the security forces take on these issues.

“Security forces should engage in other challenges facing the country like education, employment, productivity to be fought.”

On the subject of the President running out of ideas, he replied that Mr President has not run out of ideas, he just runs the state in accordance with the constitution not in accordance with a decree.

Major General Ibrahim urged Nigerians to have some faith in the country.

“Have some faith in the country, you’re at work feeling safe, do you think if there was war or anarchy you would be in this state of affairs?” he asked.
