Nigerian pop star Davido recently made some startling revelations in a no holds barred interview with media personality, Ebuka Obi-Uchendu. Davido spoke extensively on various issues surrounding his relationship with the two other artistes who together with him, are regarded as being at the top of the food chain as far as the Afrobeats genre is concerned.
Davido’s latest song ‘’FEM has been getting a lot of attention since its release. It broke YouTube Nigeria’s record for most viewed video in 24 hours, it’s played across the country and beyond, as is on the lips of almost everyone, regardless of their level in society.
But there’s been a lot of speculation about who the song is about, with many pointing towards fellow musician, Burna Boy.
In the explosive interview with Ebuka, Davido alluded to the growing tension with ‘African Giant’, Burna Boy, adding more fuel to the fire. According to Davido, ‘FEM’ is not entirely about Burnasubject to zz, but he meant the part of the song where he asked the subject to call him.
“The song is not about him. Tell Odogwu say we like to party,” Davido told Ebuka, referring to the song’s lyrics, which are also the titles of two Burna Boy songs. “Why is everyone asking what ‘FEM’ was about? Burna Boy and I are brothers. We can’t be in the same room and have an argument. We’ve outgrown that.”
Davido went on to say he was happy for the Grammy nominee’s success but things got rough between them some months ago after he posted a picture showing himself and Wizkid as the two greatest artists in Nigeria.
“I’m happy for you, I’m happy you’re rich and successful…What’s the fight for? Now you’re angry that I posted me and Wizkid, but you are with Wizkid in London every day. If they plan to come together against me it won’t work. I am not fighting them. We’re the biggest in the game.”
The first inkling of tension between the two pop stars can be traced back to March when Burna Boy announced that his next album would come in July. In May, when Davido suggested his album would come in July too, Burna’s response was “July will be very funny and I shall laugh accordingly.”
Davido later tweeted an artwork of him and Wizkid with the caption “The 2 greatest of all time.” Burna then responded with: You cannot play football. Everybody knows you cannot play football and you are an embarrassment to the team. But your daddy bought the football team,” Burna said then.
But according to Davido in the interview, “I’ve never said or wanted to do him bad. Even the guys telling him David is saying this and that, his PA knows what I did for him. I just woke up, it was all talk about the football team.
“Let’s all come together. But they won’t respond. With ‘FEM’, I just had to. If he replies, I’ll like it.”
The ‘Fall’ singer also revealed that he wanted to do a collaborative album and tour with Wizkid but their infamous rivalry stopped it from happening.
“I’ve tried to do an album with Wiz,” Davido told Ebuka. “I’ve tried to do a tour with Wiz. Like we’ve spoken about it. Of course, I felt we were both in competition. He knows that. And that could be the reason… ’cause I’ve never done anything. I love Wizkid and he loves me too. But the competition caused this.
“The fans don’t make it easy. I love Wizkid bruh. I know he loves me too.”
