The House of Representatives has initiated a probe into Alex Ikwechegh, a member representing the Aba North/South federal constituency of Abia State, following allegations of assault against Stephen Abuwatseya, a Bolt driver.
During a plenary session on Tuesday, the House referred Ikwechegh to the Committee on Ethics and Privileges after a “point of privilege” motion was raised by Majority Leader Julius Ihonvbere.
Ikwechegh, a member of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), recently surfaced in the news after a viral video showed him in a heated confrontation with Abuwatseya.
In the footage, Ikwechegh was seen slapping and hurling insults at the driver, whom he accused of being disrespectful for requesting that the lawmaker approach the car to collect his package.
The incident, which occurred on October 27 in the Maitama district of Abuja, drew widespread criticism and calls for disciplinary action.
The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has since invited Ikwechegh for questioning regarding the altercation.
In a statement, Ikwechegh expressed remorse, offering an apology to Abuwatseya and the Nigerian public. He acknowledged his regret, attributing his behavior to momentary frustration but emphasised that there should be no excuse for his actions.
Addressing the incident in the House, Majority Leader Ihonvbere highlighted the need to protect the reputation of the parliament. He stated that he had been “inundated” with calls and messages expressing concern over the lawmaker’s conduct. Ihonvbere reminded his colleagues that they are held to high standards and must remain mindful of their actions to uphold the integrity of the legislative body.
Ikwechegh responded to the concerns raised, rising to apologise once again, acknowledging that his reaction was unwarranted “despite the provocation.”
Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, who presided over the session, commended Ikwechegh for showing remorse, describing his apology as “emotional and very touching.”
Kalu indicated that while Nigerians have called for the lawmaker’s suspension, the House will not rush into punitive action. Instead, the matter will be thoroughly reviewed by the Ethics and Privileges Committee.
