House of Reps Summons FCT Minister, Security Officials Over Rising Insecurity in Abuja

The House of Representatives has summoned Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), along with key security officials, to address the worsening security situation in Abuja.

The summons includes Olatunji Disu, the FCT Commissioner of Police, and Adeola Ajayi, the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS).

This decision was made during a plenary session on Tuesday, following the adoption of a motion of urgent public importance sponsored by Ismail Dabo, a lawmaker from Bauchi State.

Dabo, who recently lost his aide, Nimah Sulaiman, to “one chance” operators, expressed deep concern over the increasing frequency of abductions and violent crime in the FCT.

Describing the tragic circumstances surrounding Sulaiman’s death, Dabo revealed that she was “kidnapped and brutally murdered at gunpoint” near Bannex Junction in Wuse 2, despite a ransom being paid in full. He emphasised the grave implications of this crime, stating, “This heinous act has sent shockwaves through our community, confirming the escalating insecurity in the FCT.”

Dabo urged his fellow lawmakers to prioritise the safety and security of citizens, citing the “tumultuous and scary situation” that residents now face. He highlighted the role of unregistered and unpainted taxis in exacerbating the problem, noting that they serve as conduits for criminal activities.

The motion received unanimous support during a voice vote led by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, underscoring the urgency of the issue and the collective responsibility of lawmakers to address the security challenges facing the capital. The summoned officials are expected to appear before the House committees on FCT, Police Affairs, and National Security and Intelligence to provide answers and propose measures to improve safety in the region.
