The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has detained House of Reps Member Alex Mascot Ikwechegh in connection with the alleged assault of a Bolt driver in Abuja.
The Police spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, confirmed that Ikwechegh is currently being questioned at the Maitama Police Station following the incident.
According to a statement issued by the Command on Monday, the driver, identified as Stephen Abuwatseya, reported the incident to the authorities after a video of the assault surfaced online. The video captures the House of Representatives member, representing Aba North and South Constituency under the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), slapping the Bolt driver.
The altercation reportedly began when the lawmaker ordered snails from a vendor, who arranged for Abuwatseya to deliver them. Upon arrival, the driver requested payment, which escalated into a heated exchange at the lawmaker’s residence.
Despite the public outcry, neither Ikwechegh nor the House of Representatives has commented on the incident, with many Nigerians demanding accountability for the assault.
The police expressed concern over the lawmaker’s allegedly dismissive attitude toward the Inspector General of Police’s office. After the alleged assault, Ikwechegh reportedly said, “You can go ahead and call the Inspector General of Police,” a statement that has been seen as undermining police authority.
The FCT Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu, has ordered a thorough investigation, with the Command pledging to ensure justice.
“The Command is committed to conducting an impartial investigation and ensuring justice in all cases. Upon completion of the investigation, appropriate legal action will be taken,” the statement read.
