Hoodlums have brought Calabar – the Cross River capital renowned for peace, cleanliness and tourism – to its knees, with arsonists and looters having a field day over the weekend.
In an orgy of violence precipitated by looters searching for COVID palliatives, several private businesses suffered the same fate as government buildings, after the mob let loose without discrimination.
The roll call of buildings that have suffered from the activities of these hoodlums cuts across both public and private property, with prominent citizens like Senators Gershom Bassey and Udoma Egba’s houses raided and vsndalised.
Below are some of the other buildings that were either razed or destroyed.
1. Cross River State Property Investment Limited, CROSPIL office, Bishop Moynagh Avenue, State Housing Estate, which was looted on Friday, October 23.
2. Independence National Electoral Commission, INEC office, Marian Road, burnt down on Friday, October 23.
3. Commercial Transport Regulatory Agency, CTRA office (100 Marian), Marian Road – vandalised on Saturday, October 24.
4. Department of Petroleum Resources, DPR – vandalised on Saturday, October 24.
5. Atakpa Police Station, Watt Market – burnt down on Saturday, October 24.
6. Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC office, Murtala Mohammed Highway – vandalised on Saturday, October 24.
7. Calabar Discount Mall (harbouring Valuemat Supermarket and other stores), Ndidem Usang Iso Road, Marian – looted and vandalised on Friday, October 23.
8. Ministry of Works warehouse, Ekorinim II – looted and burnt down on Friday, October 23.
9. Cross River State Roll back Malaria centre, Barracks Road -looted and vandalised on Saturday, October 24.
10. Bulavaard joint owned by APC chieftain, Ntufam Hillard Ettah, Etta Agbor – looted and vandalised on Saturday, October 24.
11. First Bank, 8 Miles – vandalised on Friday, October 23.
12. West African Examination Council, WAEC office, Murtala Mohammed Highway – burnt down on Saturday, October 24.
13. Federal Psychiatric hospital, Calabar Road – looted and vandalised on Saturday, October 24.
