Herders’ Crisis: Buhari Doesn’t Understand How Grave the Situation Is, Soyinka Says

Nigerian Noble Laureate, Wole Soyinka has again criticised the country’s President Muhammadu Buhari of not being in charge of Nigeria accusing the president of not appreciating how grave the herders crisis is.

Soyinka, a Professor of Comparative literature stated this on Thursday when he featured on ARISE News.

He said President Buhari has failed to understand and appreciate the gravity of the herders’ crisis that has in recent times rocked Nigeria.

“I have said this before and I wish to repeat this, Buhari does not appreciate the situation. He doesn’t understand, I see no evidence that he understands how grave the situation is,” Soyinka told ARISE News.

“I have said again and again that I don’t believe he is in charge, because it’s not possible in my view for a head of state, a commander-in-chief of the armed forces to say he is presiding over a nation and things get to this level, something is critically wrong within the leadership of this nation.”

Professor Soyinka was reacting to the recent incidence where Fulani herders trespassed on his property in Ogun State, southwestern Nigeria. He said his experience is just typical of what is currently obtainable across the country.

“Wole Soyinka is just another individual, just like another farmer, another student and I want the people to understand this, what happened to me with this incident is just typical of what’s happening to millions of people all over the country and we cannot just sit still and say that we are relying on central help when obviously it’s not coming,” Professor Soyinka said.
