Health Experts Warn Of Rapid Spread Of Mpox Strain In Congo

WHO has reported at least 8,000 Mpox cases in Congo in 2024 resulting in 384 deaths.

Global health experts have expressed deep concern about a dangerous new strain of Mpox rapidly spreading along the eastern border of Democratic Republic of Congo.

This strain has been identified in several cities along the border, such as Goma, which shares its border with Rwanda.

 The WHO has reported at least 8,000 Mpox cases in the DRC this year, resulting in 384 deaths, with the majority of fatalities occurring among children under 15 years old.

In 2023, the country recorded its highest number of Mpox infections and deaths to date, with 654 fatalities and over 14,500 reported cases.
