Prince Harry and Meghan are joining the high-profile lineup for Global Citizen’s vaccine fundraising concert, ‘Vax Live: The Concert to Reunite the World.’
The couple will serve as the campaign chairs of Global Citizen’s effort to deliver Covid-19 vaccines to medical workers in the world’s poorest countries.
The Sussexes are expected to deliver a message on the importance of global vaccine equity, according to a press release. They have also been leading a coordinated effort to raise funds across the private sector for the vaccine-sharing program COVAX, which has wealthy governments share excess doses and encourages pharmaceutical companies like Moderna to make vaccines available at not-for-profit prices.
“Over the past year, our world has experienced pain, loss, and struggle—together. Now we need to recover and heal—together,” Harry and Meghan said in a statement.
“We can’t leave anybody behind. We will all benefit, we will all be safer, when everyone everywhere has equal access to the vaccine. We must pursue equitable vaccine distribution, and in that, restore faith in our common humanity. This mission couldn’t be more critical or important.”
The livestreamed event, happening May 8, will be hosted by actress and musician Selena Gomez and headlined by Jennifer Lopez.
US President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris will also appear during the broadcast as part of the “We Can Do This” initiative to increase confidence in COVID-19 vaccines. French President Emmanuel Macron, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and Croatian Prime Andrej Minister Plenković will also appear at the concert.
Additional figures include Foo Fighters, Eddie Vedder, J Balvin and H.E.R., with hosts Chrissy Teigen, David Letterman, Gayle King and Jimmy Kimmel and actors Ben Affleck, Nomzamo Mbatha, Olivia Munn and Sean Penn also set to appear.
