A climate protest in Amsterdam took an unexpected turn as Greta Thunberg’s speech was interrupted by a stage invader on Sunday. The man, expressing discontent, attempted to pull the microphone from Thunberg’s hands, stating that he “came here for a climate demonstration, not a political view.”
Prior to the incident, chants of “Palestine will be free” resonated from the crowd. Earlier in the rally, another activist had her speech cut short after using the phrase “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free.” This phrase has sparked controversy, with many Jewish groups interpreting it as a call for the destruction of Israel, while pro-Palestinian activists argue it signifies a desire to end Israel’s occupation of the West Bank and blockade of Gaza.
After the stage invader was removed, Thunberg, in solidarity with the cause, joined the crowd in chanting “no climate justice on occupied land.” The incident follows criticism directed at Thunberg last month for sharing pro-Palestinian messages on social media, with some accusing her of not adequately supporting Israeli victims of Hamas attacks. The events highlight the intersection of climate activism and political perspectives within the broader context of global issues.
