In a move to address the economic challenges facing Osun State, Governor Ademola Adeleke has rolled out a series of policy directives aimed at easing the financial burdens on residents. This follows his promise to tackle issues raised during recent national protests, particularly those affecting food security, fuel prices, and workers’ welfare.
Adeleke, while reaffirming his commitment to the people, issued instructions to various government agencies to expedite the implementation of critical programmes. “I am committed to implementing our commitments, especially from the recent national protests as it affects issues within our mandate areas,” he said. The Governor stressed that his administration’s top priority remains the welfare of the people, a cornerstone of his governance strategy.
Among the key initiatives announced is the immediate commencement of the state’s food security action plan. Adeleke directed the Ministry of Agriculture and the Food Security Committee to “roll out action plans with timeliness for achieving the goals of food access, farm security, and food affordability.” He further disclosed plans to distribute farm equipment, seedlings, and other essential inputs next week, marking a significant step towards bolstering agricultural productivity in the state.
In addition to food security, the Governor also addressed the pressing issue of fuel prices. He instructed the state task force on petrol monitoring to engage with marketers across Osun to prevent the hoarding of petroleum products, which exacerbates the economic pain of residents. “I urge petrol retailers and marketers not to hoard petrol products. They need to support the people by not exploiting the situation for personal gains,” Governor Adeleke stated.
On the matter of workers’ welfare, the Governor highlighted ongoing efforts to clear inherited salary and pension debts, while also confirming the establishment of an implementation committee for the minimum wage. “We are committed to supporting our workers as a labour-friendly government,” he remarked, noting that labour leaders appreciate the administration’s dedication to improving the lives of workers and pensioners.
He also touched on youth empowerment, directing the Ministry of Science and Innovations to prepare an implementation plan for the newly approved State ICT and Innovation Policies. He emphasized the government’s commitment to creating jobs through technology, particularly for young people, saying, “Our Government recognises deployment of ICT for job creation and youth engagement.”
Adeleke then reassured residents of his administration’s commitment to good governance and service delivery, stating, “Our Government is an agent of good governance and democratic dividends. We will not relent in our public-spirited service to our dear state.”
