A Ghanaian member of parliament has been shot dead on Friday morning by persons suspected to be armed robbers in the central part of the country as he returned from a campaign trip.
Local media reports suggest Ekow Quansah Hayford was attacked by six gunmen after campaigning in his Mfantseman constituency.
He was campaigning for re-election in the scheduled December 7 Presidential and Parliamentary elections.
Joy online website quoted eyewitnesses to have said the MP identified himself to the gunmen as a lawmaker during the incident which led to the gunmen shooting him twice – accusing him of being the cause of Ghanaians’ problems.
Local media also suggests that the driver of the vehicle was shot and is receiving treatment, while three other occupants were however unharmed.
The 49-year-old MP entered parliament in 2016 and was hopeful of retaining the seat in the December election.
