Ghana High Commission Urges Nigerian Students To Seek Admission in Ghanaian Universities

Ghana High Commission in Nigeria has invited Nigerians to seek university education in Ghana, insisting that the West African country offers better affordable tuition than most Nigerian private universities.

Speaking on Thursday in Abuja at the 2023/2024 On-Spot-Admissions Screening for University of Ghana, the Deputy High Commissioner of Ghana to Nigeria, Eddison Mensah Agbenyegah, said: “While the cost of education varies among universities, studying in Ghana might be more affordable for Nigerian students compared to options in some other countries. This is particularly true for private universities in Nigeria, which can have higher tuition fees.”

The envoy while speaking on “Why You Should Study in Ghanaian Higher Education Institutions,” said: “There are many places to study, but Ghana is among the best places to study in the African continent. Generally, universities in Ghana have spacious campuses, well-built facilities, and high level educational standards. The cost of studying in Ghana is relatively lower than the cost of living in developed countries and the country offers a lot of opportunities to young people that can help them develop their careers after graduation.

He noted that: “This year, the premier university – the University of Ghana – Legon, and several other Ghanaian universities, have opened their Application Portals to receive applications from West African students. The University of Ghana in particular, has reduced its tuition fees for all ECOWAS students since the 2021/2022 academic year, now allows for payment in Naira at Access Bank Nigeria, and instituted payment plans to cushion parents and students. In fact, there is an ongoing proposal, driven by the Dean of International Programmes Office, Prof. Eric Osei-Assibey, for the University of Ghana to further reduce tuition fees for ECOWAS students given the current economic situations in Nigeria and other West African countries.

“We would update all prospective parents, students, counsellors, exams officer, and facilitators in Nigeria once the new tuition reduction proposal is accepted and approved for implementation.”

The envoy said some of the reasons Ghanaian universities should be a destination of choice for Nigerian students include quality of education, diverse and international recognition of program offerings, affordability, safe environment and favourable weather conditions, direct admissions as there is no need to take entrance examination after the right subjects are passed at WAEC, friendly and similar culture, lectures are in English language, proximity to home and limited strike actions, networking opportunities, international exposure and experience and  scholarships.
