Femi Gbajabiamila, the Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu, has stated that there is no set timeline for the implementation of the Stephen Oronsaye report.
The report, which aims to reduce the cost of governance by scrapping and merging certain government agencies, was endorsed by the president in February with a directive for its full implementation to enhance efficiency in the federal service.
In March, a 10-member committee was formed to oversee the implementation of the report. However, despite these steps, the process appears to be moving slowly.
Speaking with reporters in Abuja on Tuesday after visiting the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI) headquarters, Gbajabiamila explained that the delay is due to the complexity of the task.
“Yes, we have been talking about this for months now, but anything worth doing is worth doing properly. It is not as easy as it sounds,” Gbajabiamila said.
He emphasised that the committee is working diligently and assured that a final report would be released soon, followed by the implementation of the recommendations. However, he could not provide a specific timeline.
Gbajabiamila added, “We don’t want to sacrifice thoroughness on the altar of anxiety. It will be done soon.”
Despite the government’s focus on reducing the cost of governance, President Tinubu has recently hinted at the possibility of creating a new Ministry of Livestock Development, which some see as contradictory to the objectives of the Oronsaye report.
The Oronsaye report, initially submitted in 2012, has long been seen as a crucial step towards addressing inefficiencies and reducing the financial burden on Nigeria’s government.
However, the challenges in its implementation highlight the complexities involved in reforming the country’s administrative structure.
