Gatwick Airport South Terminal Evacuated, Bomb Disposal Team Deployed Suspicious Item Found In Luggage

A bomb disposal unit has been dispatched to Gatwick Airport following the evacuation of a “large part” of its South Terminal.

Sussex Police reported that a “suspected prohibited item” was discovered in luggage, prompting the deployment of explosive experts to the terminal.

Authorities have cautioned that their actions are “causing significant disruption,” resulting in the closure of several roads surrounding the South Terminal.

The police stated, “We advise the public to avoid the area where possible.”

The airport, the UK’s second busiest, confirmed the terminal’s evacuation due to a “security incident”.

In a post on X, it stated: “We are working diligently to resolve the issue as swiftly as possible.”

Social media footage showed crowds of travellers moving away from the terminal building.

Passengers have been advised to check the status of their flights with their respective airlines.

The airport indicated that its North Terminal continues to operate normally. Gatwick Express announced that its trains are not stopping at Gatwick Airport.

A tweet issued stated, “Gatwick Airport will not be served until further notice.

“This is due to the police and emergency services dealing with an incident at the airport.

“At present, the station and airport are being evacuated whilst the police are dealing with an incident. We would recommend delaying your journey until later this morning.”

Local bus services are also impacted and are unable to reach the airport.

According to aviation analytics firm Cirium, more than 600 flights were scheduled to take off or land at Gatwick on Friday, totalling over 121,000 passenger seats.
