France Detects First Case Of New Mpox Variant in Brittany

France has reported its first mpox clade 1b case in Brittany

France has confirmed its first case of the new mpox variant, the clade 1b variant, according to a statement from the country’s health ministry reported by AFP. The patient, a woman in the northwestern region of Brittany, was diagnosed at a hospital in Rennes, French regional newspaper “Ouest France” revealed on Monday.

The new variant, originating from Central Africa, has been classified as a global health emergency by the World Health Organisation (WHO) since August. While the woman had no travel history to Central Africa, she had been in contact with two individuals who had recently returned from the region, AFP reported.

French health authorities have launched an investigation to identify the source of the infection and are actively tracing all potential contacts to prevent further spread. This is part of a broader effort to contain the outbreak of this more virulent strain of mpox, which has drawn global attention in recent months.

France’s announcement follows similar cases reported in neighbouring countries. Germany identified its first case of the clade 1b variant in October, followed by Britain shortly thereafter. These cases underscore the virus’s potential to spread beyond its region of origin.

The clade 1b variant is linked to a resurgence of mpox cases globally, raising concerns about its transmission pathways and the effectiveness of current containment measures. Health experts have urged increased vigilance and cooperation among nations to mitigate the risks of widespread outbreaks.

As investigations continue in France, authorities are urging the public to remain alert and adhere to any health advisories issued in the coming days.
