Four individuals have been detained as suspects to the stabbing of the father of Lamine Yamal, a rising teenage soccer star in Spain, as confirmed by the Catalan police on Thursday.
Mounir Nasraoui, the father of the 17-year-old Barcelona standout, was admitted to the hospital in critical condition on Wednesday after being stabbed twice, according to Catalonia’s regional police force.
In an Instagram statement released on Thursday, Nasraoui expressed that he was “feeling better” and extended his gratitude for the outpouring of support.
The assault took place in a parking area in Mataró, a city near Barcelona where Yamal’s father resides, following a dispute between Nasraoui and several other men who also live in the area, the police reported.
Earlier, local police in Mataró intervened to break up the altercation, with footage showing Yamal’s father donning a jersey with his son’s name on it.
According to the police, the suspects have no prior criminal history. Three of them were apprehended late Wednesday, shortly after the incident, while the fourth was detained on Thursday.
All four suspects are facing potential assault charges and are expected to be formally charged by the following Monday, as stated by the police press office.
Yamal, who played a pivotal role in Spain’s Euro 2024 triumph and is regarded as one of soccer’s brightest prospects, participated in Barcelona’s training session on Thursday, ahead of their La Liga season opener against Valencia on Saturday.
The young soccer sensation was honored as the tournament’s top young player after netting a remarkable goal in the semifinal against France and assisting Nico Williams’ goal in Spain’s 2-1 victory over England in the final.
