Former Emir of Kano, Sanusi II, Calls for a United Nigeria

Former Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has called on Africa’s most populous country Nigeria to stay united despite the challenges of insecurity, lower economic growth and other issues it is faced with, as the country celebrates its diamond jubilee.

Sanusi, a former Central Bank of Nigeria governor, shared his thoughts during a virtual event organised by the THISDAY ARISE Group to celebrate the occasion of Nigeria’s 60th independence anniversary.

“We have had 60 years of good times and bad times, we have had difficulties and we have had highs and lows. We have gone through civil wars and we are going through one of the most difficult times in our country’s history; terrorism, extremism, extreme poverty and a looming recession,” Sanusi said.

“These are difficulties that look like they will not end but they will come to pass, what we need is to unify ourselves and to dedicate ourselves to a brighter future.”

Sanusi called on government to put the right policies in place to boost the country’s economic development and become more competitive in the world.

“We need to implement the right policies and to remember that together we will remain stronger than divided. It is my hope that this country will realise it’s true potential of being a truly great third world country and move forward to a first world country.”

It will be recalled that the former Emir of Kano has been clamouring for higher school enrolment in the northern part of the country and a more inclusive growth for the less vulnerable in Nigeria.
