The first Executive Governor of Anambra State and Elder statesman, Dr. Chukwuemeka Ezeife, has passed away at the age of 85.
According to a press statement issued by his family in the early hours of Friday, Ezeife died on Thursday around 6pm at a hospital in Abuja.
The statement, which was signed by Rob Nwakaire Ezeife, read, “On behalf of the Ezeife Dynasty of Igbo-Ukwu, I wish to announce the promotion to glory of our most distinguished son, Okwadike, Dr. Chukwuemeka Ezeife, CON, a former Federal Permanent Secretary, the first Executive Governor of Anambra State, a former Political Adviser to the President and former Presidential Aspirant.
“This sad event took place yesterday at 6pm at the Federal Medical Centre, Abuja. More details about the deceased and the arrangements for his State Burial will be announced later.”
In the third republic of Nigeria, Ezeife was elected governor of Anambra in 1992 on the platform of the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
He held the position of governor until November 1993, when former military leader Sani Abacha took over as the country’s head of state.
When Nigeria began its fourth republic in 1999, former President Olusegun Obasanjo also named him special adviser on political affairs.
