Former Ajax forward Quincy Promes has been arrested in Dubai at the behest of Dutch prosecutors after being sentenced to six years in prison for his involvement in smuggling 1,370 kilograms of cocaine.
The ex-Netherlands international, currently plying his trade with Russian club Spartak Moscow, was convicted by an Amsterdam court in February. Dutch authorities have sought his extradition back to the Netherlands, with reports indicating that the 32-year-old has been apprehended in the United Arab Emirates.
In a statement, the Amsterdam Public Prosecution office disclosed, “The arrest was made based on a Red Notice issued by the Netherlands. Netherlands will request the extradition of the man.” Reports suggest Promes was enjoying a luxurious stay in Dubai before his arrest, but authorities from both countries collaborated to take him into custody.
The statement further added, “At this time, it is not possible to provide additional information to avoid disruption of the ongoing investigation.”
Promes, who boasts 50 caps and seven senior international goals for the Netherlands, now faces imprisonment after being found guilty of complicity in the smuggling of the substantial cocaine haul. He stands accused of involvement in the import and export of Class A drugs.
This isn’t the first brush with the law for Promes, as the former Twente and Sevilla winger was previously convicted in 2023 for stabbing his cousin in the leg. Although sentenced to an 18-month jail term for that offense, Promes did not attend the trial and continues to deny the allegations against him.
