Flash Floods Sweep Across Kenya, Leaving 13 Dead And 15,000 Displaced

Severe rainfall across various regions of Kenya has resulted in the loss of lives and displacement of thousands, according to the United Nations.

The U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, said approximately 13 individuals have died, with around 15,000 people displaced and nearly 20,000 affected due to the heavy rains and ensuing flash floods sweeping the nation.

Kenya, an East African country, has encountered numerous casualties from flooding during past rainy seasons, particularly in lake regions and downstream areas of major rivers.

The Kenya Red Cross Society said that extensive flooding disrupted five major roads, including the Garissa Road in northern Kenya, where a bus transporting 51 passengers was swept away on Tuesday. Fortunately, all passengers were successfully rescued.

The country’s disaster management agency has issued flood alerts for residents in Lamu, Tana River, and Garissa counties, situated downstream of the Tana River, following breaches in dams upstream. Residents have been advised to relocate to higher ground to ensure their safety.

Presently, nine out of Kenya’s 47 counties have reported incidents of flooding, highlighting the widespread impact of the ongoing heavy rains.
