Wildfires continue to ravage Los Angeles and neighboring Ventura County, with at least six fires burning out of control.
The latest blaze, known as the Sunset Fire, ignited in the Hollywood Hills and has prompted mandatory evacuations, including in areas heavily populated by celebrity homes. As of now, officials report that only the Woodley fire has seen a decrease in size, with all other fires still at 0% containment.
The fire season has proven particularly devastating, with the Palisades Inferno, which broke out on Tuesday, now considered the most destructive in Los Angeles’ history. This fire is still growing, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. More than 37,000 residents have been forced to flee their homes due to the Palisades fire alone.
The Eaton Fire has claimed at least five lives, and over 100,000 people have been evacuated. The situation remains dire, with a growing number of displaced residents and property damage.
Firefighters are facing unprecedented challenges, as they struggle with a shortage of water. In an effort to combat the flames, some are resorting to taking water from swimming pools and ponds to supplement their supplies. The desperate measures have highlighted the severity of the crisis and the urgency for resources to keep up with the spreading fires.
Amid the chaos, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has come under scrutiny for her absence during the early stages of the wildfires. Bass, who was in Africa as part of a diplomatic delegation when the fires broke out, defended her decision, stating that she was working on international relations that could help with future fire management. However, her absence has sparked backlash, especially given the reports that she had previously cut more than $17 million from the fire department’s budget last summer.
