A fire at a military ammunition depot in Chad’s capital, N’Djamena, ignited a series of explosions on Tuesday night, according to Foreign Affairs Minister Koulamallah Abderaman. Witnesses reported that at least one person was killed, and several others were injured in the incident.
Residents living near the depot described chaotic scenes as blasts rocked the neighborhood. Moustapha Adoum Mahamat, a local resident, said, “Loud blasts woke us up. Our house was shaking as if someone was shooting at us. Then we saw a big fire at the military camp and smoke and things exploding in the air. We could see artillery fly over us.”
One resident reported seeing three wounded individuals on the street, two of whom were taken to the hospital on motorbikes. Tragically, another resident’s neighbor, a shopkeeper, was killed when a shell hit him.
Media images showed spent artillery shells scattered in homes, highlighting the danger faced by civilians during the explosions.
The fire occurred just a few kilometers from Chad’s main international airport. Authorities have confirmed that the airport was not affected by the incident.
