The US Justice Department has revealed charges against an Iranian assassination plot aimed at President-elect Donald Trump before the presidential election.
The complaint, filed in a Manhattan federal court, accused an Iranian Revolutionary Guard official of instructing Farjad Shakeri to develop a plan to monitor and eventually kill Trump.
If Shakeri couldn’t form a plan by the election, the official suggested waiting until after, assuming Trump’s defeat would ease assassination efforts.
Shakeri informed the FBI that he had no intention of submitting an assassination plan within the seven-day deadline set by the Iranian official.
The charges, unveiled shortly after Trump’s election victory over Kamala Harris, highlight what federal authorities describe as Iran’s continued attempts to target US government officials, including Trump, on American soil.
