A devastating fire in the southern French city of Nice early Thursday morning has claimed the lives of seven people, including three young children and a teenager.
Authorities are investigating the blaze as a potential arson attack, citing evidence of petrol being poured into a stairwell by hooded individuals.
The tragic incident unfolded in the Moulins area of Nice, near the city’s airport, where flames engulfed the upper floors of an apartment block.
Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin confirmed that among the victims were three young children, describing the event as a “terrible tragedy” that police would thoroughly investigate.
According to Nice prosecutor Damien Martinelli, initial findings prompted the opening of an inquiry into acts of arson as the cause of death.
Reports indicate that all seven victims belonged to the same family, with the deceased children aged five, seven, and 10. Additionally, a teenager, two women, and a man lost their lives in the blaze.
Tragically, two family members attempted to escape through a window; one succumbed to the fire, while the other remains in critical condition.
Eyewitness Iftahou recounted arriving at the scene amid the blaze, realising the grim fate awaiting those trapped inside.
Najim Maecha, representing the Comorian community in southern France, expressed familiarity with the family, noting their residence in Nice since approximately 2013. The devastating toll prompted Mayor Christian Estrosi to underscore the gravity of the disaster, emphasising not only the loss of life but also the injuries sustained by another 30 individuals due to smoke inhalation.
“I’ve requested the interior minister deploy security forces to ensure residents’ safety and prevent further incidents following this tragic event under investigation as potential arson,” Mayor Estrosi stated.
As investigators delve into the circumstances surrounding the fire, the community of Nice mourns the loss of innocent lives and awaits answers amidst ongoing safety concerns.
