Fashanu: I Don’t Think Charles’ Coronation Will Mean Anything To Nigerians

Wimbledon and Aston Villa legend, John Fashanu, has said that he doesn’t think King Charles coronation ceremony will mean anything to Nigerians.

Speaking with ARISE NEWS on Friday, the British-born Nigerian footballer said that whilst lots of people are already saying the British monarchy is not needed anymore, Nigerians in the UK, going about their daily lives also do not think much of the British monarchy.

When asked if he thought the coronation will mean anything to Nigerians in the UK, he said, “With what is going on now I don’t think it will have any effect at all, it’s a nice one to smile and to watch, but not any effect at all.”

The former professional footballer said that the incoming British monarch has recently ceased to attract the absolute amount of admiration he (Fashanu) and “everybody” had for him.

“Let me be very honest, I am a little bit sceptical of what is going on because of the way Her Excellency Princess Di was taken out. Whether we believe she was cold-bloodedly murdered or she just tripped over a stone and died, that’s up to you.

“Even though we are seeing these wonderful people going around him, a lot of Britons are uncomfortable with what is going on with King Charles.” Mr Fashanu said this juxtaposing his earlier admiration and love for King Charles in the days he was a young prince. “He shook everyone’s hands,” He says.

The founder of John Fashanu Sports Academy in Abuja has however said that he thinks the news of the coronation silver lines the royal family situation as King Charles is gradually gaining popularity again.

“I think tomorrow (coronation day) will be a beautiful day,

The royal family is endemic as so they are going nowhere. The news is not enough to break a family,” he says.
