Ex-CJN Onnoghen’s Appeal Over 2019 Removal Set for Hearing September 19

The Abuja Court of Appeal has scheduled September 19 for the hearing of ex-CJN Onnoghen’s appeal against his 2019 removal.

The Court of Appeal in Abuja has fixed September 19 to begin hearing of an appeal by former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Walter Onnoghen who is challenging his removal from office in 2019 following a judgment by the Code of Conduct Tribunal CCT which found him guilty of under-declaring his assets.

The CCT also ordered the forfeiture of five of his bank accounts and the money therein.

This appeal has been at the Appellate Court for five years.

But when the matter was called this Tuesday, the counsel for the government Tijjani Gazali said the case file of the Justice Onnoghen appeal is not at the Attorney-General’s Office.

He informed the Court that the government had contracted a private counsel, Aliyu Umar, now deceased, to handle the matter.

Gazali however informed the Court that the Attorney General is keen on reaching an amicable settlement of the matter, saying the process is already underway.

Following an application by Justice Onnoghen’s Counsel, Chris Uche, the three-member panel of the Appeal Court ruled in favour of a speedy hearing of the appeal.
