Everton are lining up Nuno Espirito Santo as their new manager with Carlo Ancelotti on the verge of taking the Real Madrid job.
Ancelotti is in talks with Real over returning for a second spell in the Bernabeu hot seat with a deal understood to be very close.
The Italian has three years left to run on his Everton contract but the Premier League club are willing to let him go to Real.
An announcement is now imminent, with Toffees owner Farhad Moshiri already making moves to bring in a replacement.
According to talkSPORT Everton are set to try and tempt Nuno into making a swift return to management.
Nuno recently left Wolves after four years in charge at Molineux.
Everton ended the season in dismal fashion despite being one of the Premier League’s early title contenders last season.
The Toffees burst out of the blocks but faded away and won just three of their 12 league matches, while they managed just six wins at Goodison Park all campaign, resulting in a 10th-place finish.
Even striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin could only manage two goals in his last eight league appearances, despite hitting eight goals in his first seven games of the season.
Meanwhile, a host of injury issues also affected the side with star signing James Rodriguez in and out of the team.
Espirito Santo also endured a difficult campaign in the Midlands.
Since getting Wolves back into the Premier League, the Portuguese impressed with the side finishing seventh in their first two seasons back, while also reaching the Europa League quarter-finals in 2019/20.
But last season, which also saw centre-forward Raul Jimenez suffer a season-ending skull fracture, they limped home in 13th position.
Ancelotti’s exit would come as a surprise particularly given he has been so keen to create a legacy on Merseyside.
In May he said on links to replacing Zinedine Zidane: “This is good publicity for me to be linked with Real Madrid but it’s not true.
“I would like to be there when the new stadium opens; to finish the contract here until 2024 means you did a good job. I would like to stay as long as possible.”
