The European Union’s antitrust regulators has officially closed a four-year-long investigation into Apple’s rules for competing e-book and audiobook app developers after the complainant withdrew its case.
The European Commission, the EU’s antitrust authority, confirmed the closure on Friday, but emphasised that the decision should not be interpreted as a ruling on whether Apple’s conduct was compliant with EU competition laws.
“The closure of an investigation is not a finding that the conduct in question complies with EU competition rules,” the Commission stated in a press release. However, the Commission did not disclose the identity of the complainant who had initiated the probe.
Despite the closure of this specific investigation, the Commission made it clear that it would continue to scrutinise business practices in the European tech sector, including those of Apple.
“We will continue to monitor business practices, including Apple’s, under both the Digital Markets Act and EU competition rules,” the Commission added.
