The conflict between Israel and Hamas has intensified in Gaza, prompting fears of a breakdown in public order and a potential mass exodus of Palestinians into Egypt. The situation in the narrow coastal strip, under a full Israeli blockade for over two months, has reached a critical point, with the border with Egypt being the only way out for the 2.3 million residents.
Most of Gaza’s population has been displaced from their homes, facing difficulty finding refuge in the densely populated enclave. The death toll has risen to around 18,000 people, and the conflict shows no signs of abating.
Following the breakdown of a week-long ceasefire, Israel initiated a ground offensive in the south, advancing from the east into the major city of Khan Younis. Warplanes have targeted areas to the west, leading to fierce clashes in northern Gaza. Israel has urged civilians to evacuate Gaza City and other areas, emphasising its operations against Hamas and terrorist organisations.
The United Nations has expressed grave concerns, stating that 85% of Gaza’s population, or 1.9 million people, are displaced. Conditions in the southern areas are described as hellish, and there are warnings of a complete breakdown in public order, raising the risk of epidemic diseases and increased pressure for mass displacement into Egypt.
U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who has been advocating for a ceasefire, warned of the imminent collapse of Gaza. He highlighted the urgent need to address the deteriorating situation, emphasising the potential for a humanitarian crisis.
Israel has denied accusations of seeking to empty Gaza, asserting that its measures aim to protect the local population. The country accuses Hamas of using civilians as human shields and stealing humanitarian aid, allegations that Hamas denies.
The situation raises questions about the immediate impact of maritime support on the ongoing conflict. With the blockade limiting options for the displaced population, concerns persist about the potential for a large-scale exodus into Egypt.
International efforts are underway to address the crisis, with the U.K. and Norway launching a maritime coalition to provide long-term support for Ukraine. As the conflict escalates, the global community faces the challenge of responding to the worsening humanitarian situation and preventing a mass displacement crisis in Gaza.
