Actor Erik von Detten, known for his role in The Princess Diaries, has been sued by an elderly couple who accuse him and precious metals company Rosland Capital of fraud and elder abuse over a $2.1 million gold investment.
According to court documents obtained, Sheila Greenberg, 85, and her husband, Norman Greenberg, 97, filed the lawsuit against von Detten and Rosland Capital, which buys and sells precious metals.
The couple alleged that the company targeted older customers and sought to exploit their fears and vulnerability.
The lawsuit states that the Greenbergs contacted Rosland in 2020 after seeing a television advertisement. They were subsequently connected to von Detten.
According to the couple, they told the actor they had about $2 million available to invest but knew little about gold. They allege that von Detten presented himself as knowledgeable about the precious metal and offered to help them.
The couple said their first purchase involved Lady Liberty gold coins worth about $1 million. However, they alleged that the coins were not delivered to them but were instead sent to a warehouse for storage.
They later made a second purchase of another $1 million worth of coins, according to the lawsuit.
The Greenbergs claimed they eventually discovered that the coins were worth considerably less than the amount they paid.
They alleged that their total investment was $2.1 million, while the coins were worth only $1.3 million.
The couple claims to have suffered about $900,000 in damages and is seeking punitive damages.
Rosland Capital filed for bankruptcy months after the lawsuit was filed.
The allegations have not been established in court.
