#EndSARS: Transparent Efforts Underway to Address Rogue Officers, President Buhari Tells Monarchs

Several days after the #EndSARS protests, Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday met with the country’s traditional rulers, assuring them of his administration’s commitment to police reform and restating that transparent efforts are underway to address rogue elements of the Nigerian Police Force.

The meeting was held at the Presidential Villa and had in attendance a delegation of traditional rulers from across the country led by the Sultan of Sokoto, Saad Abubakar, and the Ooni of Ife, Adeyeye Ogunwusi.

Last month, youths in major cities across Nigeria for more than 12 days took to the streets in protests, codenamed #EndSARS, demanding an end to police brutality, the disbandment of notorious unit SARS, and police reforms. But Buhari told told the monarchs that “we have heard the loud cries of our youth and children, and we are attending to their concerns.”

“Strong, transparent efforts are underway to address those rogue elements of the Nigerian Police Force. Simultaneously, the Nigerian Police Force will also undergo much needed reform that covers welfare, working conditions, and code of conduct. That will usher in a more professional workforce,” the Nigerian leader was quoted as saying in a statement by his spokesperson, Femi Adesina.
