Dr. Okey Ikechukwu, a leadership and governance consultant has criticised Nigeria’s Northern states governors for their stance on the #EndSARS protests across the country, describing them as not being in the know of situations and happenings in their states.
Governors from the region through the Chairman of the Northern Governors Forum and Plateau State governor, Simon Lalong, argued that there was no need to disband the Special Anti-robbery Squad, but called for the reformation of the rogue unit to enable it carry out its functions optimally.
“What do they really know about what’s going on in their states, many of them are here in Abuja and hardly spend a week in their respective states.
“The people taking a different position what has SARS really done in their states? All the roads that have been taken over by bandits have SARS taken them out? The north is overrun by marauders, is SARS taking them out?
“So what’s the rational basis for the governors position on this matter, maybe to support the presidency but you see solutions are what need now not statements and indications of loyalty because they will all scamper for cover if what is coming comes,” said Ikechukwu an Executive Director of Development Specs Academy.
According to Ikechukwu, the failure of the northern governors to speak through a proper a coalition like the governor’s forum, or a political party’s governors forum continues to show the lack synergy in governments at all level in the country.
He noted that the different views of governors from the different regions in the country shows that there is division in the country.
“Northern governors not supporting #EndSARS and Southern governors taking an opposite position, what does this tell you further division, unstatesmanly position by people who should know better,” he said.
