#EndSARS: Nigerians Hold Anti-Police Brutality Rallies in London, Toronto

Since widespread protests against police brutality erupted in Nigeria more than a week ago, citizens in several cities across the world have taken to the streets in demonstrations in solidarity with the #EndSARS Movement.

In Toronto, Canada, protesters gathered at the City Hall on Saturday, demanding further reforms and an end to police brutality. Many carried placards with the hashtag EndSARS and sang the national anthem. It was one of many protests planned in cities across Canada.

Meanwhile in the UK, a protest of a different kind occurred in London where Nigerians staged a march and prayer vigil Saturday morning. Organised by a group of Christians, the march, called the End Police Brutality Prayer Walk, saw protesters walk more than two miles from The Shard to the Nigerian High Commission.

Starting from the London Bridge area, the group chanted and sang through Southwark and Waterloo, to Charing Cross, where the embassy is situated. The group used songs and prayers to call for the end of police brutality and usher in what they called “the New Nigeria”, one that would be absolved of corruption and usher the country into its rightful place as the biggest economy in Africa.

“We’re declaring a new Nigeria, and it’s important to us that we take our place at the history of Nigeria, a protester said. “This is the time to take over, we are prepared for a time such as this.”

Another protester said: “It really hurts to see everything going on and obviously as a Christian I decided to…come together, pray and intercede for Nigeria.”

Anti-police brutality protests have been held in other cities across the world, including in New York, Pretoria, Berlin and Geneva among others.
