Elon Musk’s X Appoints Legal Representative in Brazil To Comply With Court Orders and Fight Ban

Elon Musk’s social media platform, X, has named Rachel de Oliveira Conceicao as its legal representative in Brazil, according to the firm’s lawyers, Andre Zonaro and Sergio Rosenthal.

This decision addresses one of the demands imposed by Brazil’s Supreme Court for the platform to continue operating in the country.

Brazilian law requires foreign companies to appoint a legal representative to manage their legal responsibilities locally. X had a representative in Brazil until mid-August but chose to close its offices, leaving the platform without the legally mandated presence in the country.

In late August, Brazil’s Supreme Court ordered mobile and internet service providers to block access to X after the platform failed to name a new representative.

The ruling followed a long-standing dispute between Musk and Brazilian Justice Alexandre de Moraes regarding X’s non-compliance with court orders to combat the spread of hate speech and misinformation.

Musk had previously criticised the blocking of accounts involved in investigations as censorship. However, on Thursday, X’s lawyers in Brazil stated that the platform had begun complying with orders to remove flagged content, fulfilling another demand from the court.

The legal appointment and X’s recent compliance mark significant steps towards resolving the conflict with Brazilian authorities and allowing the platform to resume operations in the country.
