Elon Musk, the world’s richest man, has shown interest in purchasing Liverpool Football Club, according to his father, Errol Musk.
However, concerns over Fenway Sports Group (FSG) potentially inflating the club’s price may delay or deter a bid.
Speaking on Times Radio, Errol Musk revealed his son’s interest in the club while also noting his personal ties to Liverpool. “Oh yes, [Elon has expressed a desire], but that doesn’t mean he’s buying it,” he clarified. “He would like to, yes, obviously. Anybody would want to – so would I.”
Errol further explained the family’s connection to the city, mentioning that Elon’s grandmother was born in Liverpool and that the family had known several members of The Beatles. “His grandmother was born in Liverpool, and we have relatives in Liverpool, and we were fortunate to know quite a few of the Beatles because they grew up with some of my family. So, we are attached to Liverpool you know,” he said, highlighting the sentimental ties that could fuel Elon Musk’s interest in the club.
Liverpool is currently valued at approximately £4.3 billion ($5.4 billion), making it one of the most valuable football clubs in the world. While Fenway Sports Group has been credited with revitalising the club since taking over in 2010, their recent sale of a minority stake to Dynasty Equity in 2023 suggests they are open to restructuring ownership.
Musk’s financial capacity far exceeds Liverpool’s current valuation—his wealth is estimated to be 80 times that of the club’s worth. This disparity in resources could make a potential deal highly lucrative for FSG, should Musk decide to submit an offer. However, Errol Musk hinted at caution, stating, “They’ll raise the price!”
In recent years, football has increasingly become a business dominated by wealthy investors and conglomerates. For clubs aiming to compete at the highest levels, the backing of an ultra-rich owner has often proven critical. Liverpool, ranked as the fourth-most valuable football team in the world by Forbes, has seen significant success under FSG. Yet, with Musk’s unprecedented financial resources, a takeover could propel the club into a new era of competitiveness and global influence.
While Errol Musk confirmed his son’s interest, he stopped short of confirming any imminent plans to purchase Liverpool. “That doesn’t mean he’s buying it,” he reiterated, suggesting that while the desire is there, the likelihood of a formal bid remains uncertain.
For now, Liverpool fans can only speculate about what Elon Musk’s ownership could mean for the club. Whether it’s a visionary investment or simply a fleeting interest, the idea of Musk’s involvement has already stirred excitement and curiosity across the footballing world.
