Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji has mourned the passing of Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, who died at age 56 following an illness.
In a statement released by his Special Adviser on Media, Yinka Oyebode, Governor Oyebanji described Gen. Lagbaja’s death as a monumental loss for Nigeria, calling him a dedicated soldier, committed officer, and skilled general who courageously defended the nation’s territorial integrity.
Gen. Lagbaja, an Osun State native, was known for his unwavering commitment to the country, dedicating both his youth and adult life to service as a commissioned officer in the Nigerian Army.
Among his notable contributions was his leadership as Theatre Commander of Operation Lafiya Dole, where his strategic acumen played a pivotal role in combating insurgency in the Northeast. Gen. Lagbaja also served as a leading commander within the Multinational Joint Task Force (MJTF) to unite Lake Chad Basin countries against terrorism, further cementing his legacy as a respected and effective military leader.
Governor Oyebanji commended Gen. Lagbaja’s brief but impactful tenure as Chief of Army Staff, particularly his emphasis on technological advancements in military operations. He recalled his personal interactions with the late general, noting Gen. Lagbaja’s swift response to security crises in Ekiti State, which contributed to the current peaceful environment following past incidents of violence and kidnappings.
Governor Oyebanji extended his condolences to the family of Gen. Lagbaja, urging them to find solace in the legacy left by the distinguished three-star general. He also expressed sympathy to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Service Chiefs, the Army High Command, the government and people of Osun State, and the entire nation, paying tribute to a remarkable patriot.
