Effanga: We Will Transmit Bayelsa Election Results Electronically, Not Manually

In an effort to dispel lingering doubts and misconceptions, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Bayelsa convened an interactive session with stakeholders, addressing concerns and clarifying the electoral process ahead of the crucial governorship election on November 11th.

Obo Effanga, the Resident Electoral Commissioner of Bayelsa State, reaffirmed the commission’s unwavering commitment to transparency and fair elections.

Effanga clarified the recent misinformation circulating in the media, stating unequivocally that INEC in Bayelsa will transmit the governorship election results via the INEC Results Viewing Portal (IReV). He emphasised that media reports suggesting manual transmission of results were inaccurate and misleading. “Nothing has changed with how we are going to conduct these elections,” Effanga assured, emphasising that the electoral commission remains steadfast in its commitment to conducting a transparent and credible electoral process.

In an interview with ARISE NEWS on Wednesday, Effanga acknowledged the challenges faced during previous elections, particularly technical glitches in the use of the IReV. He pointed out that these issues were resolved in subsequent elections, including the governorship and house of assembly election, ensuring seamless transmission of results.

In preparation for the upcoming elections, Effanga highlighted the measures taken by INEC, including the organised distribution of non-sensitive materials. Effanga assured that sensitive materials would be delivered closer to the election date. Effanga further highlighted INEC’s preparedness, citing various initiatives undertaken to guarantee a successful electoral process. “We have conducted training sessions for involved staff and security personnel and we have engaged in numerous meetings with stakeholders.”

Acknowledging concerns about security and potential disruptions, Effanga reassured the public, stating, “We are working with security agencies, but our duty is to conduct elections. It is the duty of the security agents to secure the life and property of everyone participating in the election.”

Effanga also addressed recent legal developments, clarifying the procedure following any court decisions. “If there’s any court judgement, it will be served on INEC headquarters. The commission headquarters will then make a decision based on the judgement received. Our duty here in Bayelsa is to implement the decisions made by the commission headquarters.”

As the election date draws nearer, INEC Bayelsa’s dedication to a smooth, secure, and credible electoral process remains resolute. Effanga further emphasised INEC’s preparedness stating, “We are prepared and preparing,” assuring that the democratic exercise will be conducted with the utmost integrity and fairness.
