Reigning champions of the 2023/24 Nigeria Women’s Football League (NWFL), Edo Queens have secured a 3-0 victory over Commercial Bank of Ethiopia FC in their debut match of the 2024 CAF Women’s Champions League.

The win at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca on Sunday, marked a historic first for the Nigerian club in this prestigious competition.

Edo Queens set the pace early, with Emem Essien finding the back of the net just five minutes into the game from a well-placed cross by Folashade Ijamilusi. This made Essien the first player in club history to score in the Women’s Champions League.

The NWFL champions doubled their lead shortly after half-time when Ijamilusi herself scored, slotting the ball into the top corner following a clever combination with Esther Moses. Ijamilusi’s strong form continues after scoring a hat trick on her debut for the Super Falcons in late October

In the 80th minute, substitute Chukwuamaka Osigwe sealed the victory, assisted by Moses, with a confident finish that underscored Edo Queens’ commanding performance.

Leading Group B, Edo Queens are set to play Egypt’s FC Masar on Wednesday, followed by a match against Mamelodi Sundown on November 17.
