Edo Assembly Partners Netherlands, CDCI, ICMPD to Tackle Human Trafficking in Transport Sector

The Edo State House of Assembly, has pledged to work with the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the Centre for Development and Cultural (CDCI), and the international Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD) to combat human trafficking and irregular migration in the transport sector in the state.

The Chairman of the committee on Transport, Ojie Eugene Inegbeboh and Chairman House Committee on Judiciary, Honourable Ahmed Waziri Oshomah, made the commitments during a two-day training workshop for members of the assembly committees on transport and judiciary which ended on Thursday in Benin City.

Speaking at the closing ceremony, Executive Director, Centre for Development and Cultural Interchange (CDCI), Mr. Emmanuel Sule, disclosed that the two-day training workshop was organised by CDCI with support from the Kingdom of the Netherlands and International Centre for Migration Policy Development to strengthen the capacity of legislators on issues of Human Trafficking and Irregular migration, such as the dangers associated with the crime, as well as on various international, national and state laws to combat the menace.

He said another objective was to enable the lawmakers to be well-informed in order to review existing and develop new laws to tackle this crime in the transport sector in the state.

In his remarks, the Kingdom of the Netherlands, whose speech was delivered by representative International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD), noted that the gathering focused on how to combat trafficking in persons and Smuggling of migrants within the transport sector in Edo State.

The speech read by the Project Manager ICMPD Regional Office West Africa Mrs. Rhoda Dia-Johnson, stated: “At ICMPD, we believe that sustained change is achievable through collaboration, strategic partnership, capacity building and unwavering commitment in addressing the challenges that confront our countries.”

This workshop, she added, stood as a testament to the shared mission to build a safer and more secured Edo State.
