A magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck northeastern Iran on Tuesday, resulting in the deaths of four people and injuries to 120 others, according to officials. The quake hit the town of Kashmar, located approximately 800 kilometers (500 miles) east of the capital, Tehran.
Iran’s state TV reported the tremor and highlighted the swift response by rescue teams. The Red Crescent has established three temporary camps to assist those affected by the disaster.
Iran is situated on major seismic faults and experiences an average of one earthquake per day. The country’s history is marred by several devastating quakes. In 2003, a magnitude 6.6 earthquake flattened the historic city of Bam, resulting in 26,000 fatalities. More recently, a magnitude 7 earthquake in 2017 struck western Iran, killing over 600 people and injuring more than 9,000.
The recent quake also impacted neighboring countries, with reports of tremors felt in Turkmenistan and Afghanistan.
