Dominican Republic Confiscates 9.5 Tons of Cocaine in Largest Drug Seizure to Date

Authorities in the Dominican Republic have made history with the country’s largest-ever cocaine seizure, totalling 9.5 tons.

Authorities in the Dominican Republic revealed on Friday the confiscation of nearly 9.5 tons of cocaine, marking the largest drug seizure in the nation’s history.

Valued at $250 million, the drugs were concealed within a banana shipment at the Caucedo port in Santo Domingo, the country’s primary seaport. The shipment originated from Guatemala and was en route to Belgium, according to Carlos Devers, spokesperson for the Dominican Republic’s Anti-Drug Agency.

Ten suspects have been arrested in connection with the haul, Devers disclosed during a press conference.

This latest seizure brings the total amount of drugs confiscated this year to nearly 47 tons. Previously, the second-largest seizure occurred in 2006, when more than 5,680 pounds (2,580 kilograms) of drugs were discovered at the same port.

The Dominican Republic has long been regarded as a significant transit point for drug trafficking.
