As Nigerians await results of the presidential and the national assembly elections more than 48 hours after the exercise, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission Professor Mahmood Yakubu, on Monday assured citizens that the process of collation and announcement of results would be transparent.
Spokesperson for the peoples democratic party’s presidential campaign council, Dino Melaye protested the results of Ekiti State announced earlier on Sunday, Melaye demanded, that the presentation of results by state collation officers for the presidential election did not in any way translate to the declaration of results by INEC. INEC chairman cautioned Dino Melaye insisting that the collation process had to be concluded before grievances from any political party can be reviewed.
The Ongoing collation process by the Independent National electoral commission has continued to generate mixed reactions from a cross section of Nigerians, especially as the Chairman of the commission had guaranteed electronic transmission of results from each polling Unit, ahead of the 2023 general election. In Rivers State, some residents of the state are challenging the results from the independent national electoral commission putting the presidential candidate of the all progressives congress Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the lead. Videos showing violence that occurred in some polling units have made the rounds on social media.
The labour party chairman of Obio/Akpor Local government area of the state alleged that the Rivers state Governor Nyesom Wike instructed officers that conducted the election to manipulate the results. In the meantime, the returning officer for the Rivers State Presidential Elections, Teddy Charles Adia has adjourned the Collation of the Presidential Result of Rivers State for alleged threat of life. He says he has received several calls and text messages from the Public threatening to deal with him for alleged compromise.
