Death Toll From Ethiopia Landslides Rises To 157

A landslide buried people in Eithopia, followed by a second landslide engulfing rescuers on Monday morning, killing 157 people

The death toll from two landslides in southern Ethiopia has surged to 157, with the number expected to rise further, a government official reported on Tuesday.

A landslide buried people in the Gofa zone of the Southern Ethiopia regional state, followed by a second landslide that engulfed others who had come to help on Monday morning, officials stated.

“Search operations are ongoing, and some bodies have yet to be recovered. The area presents significant challenges,” Markos Melese, head of the National Disaster Response agency in Gofa Zone, told Reuters over the phone.

“We have recovered 157 bodies from two villages so far. We anticipate the number will increase.”

On Monday, an official reported that at least 50 people had died, including children and police officers.
