Reactions have trailed the meeting between governors, stakeholders and the presidential candidate of the All progressives congress Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Sunday, in which the party’s national chairman, Abdullahi Adamu affirmed that the ruling party stands with the position of its governors on the naira redesign.
Amidst allegations that governors and other politicians who have opposed the directive of President Muhammadu Buhari and the Central Bank of Nigeria, on the validity of the old N500 and N1,000 Naira notes are going against the redesign policy because they have stocked up the old notes to induce voters, a new video showing residents in Ogun state being handed the old banknotes allegedly from the Governor of the State Dapo Abiodun made the rounds on social media over the weekend.
The APC appears not to be the only party advocating for the validity of the old naira notes on Sunday, in an apparent U-Turn, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party Atiku Abubakar appealed to the Central Bank of Nigeria, to allow commercial banks to accept deposits of the old naira notes. On Friday, a massive crowd turned up at the office of the central bank of Nigeria demanding to deposit their old bank notes following President Mohammadu Buhari’s nation wide address, in which the president directed the CBN to extend the validity of only the old N200 Naira notes till the 10th of April.
In a video an official of the CBN was seen telling the crowd that commercial banks have been directed to accept their old bank notes below the threshold of N500 hundred thousand Naira. Comedian Nwanyi Nnewi in a new video skit, captured the current state of a nation trying to grapple with a cashless policy
