Covid-19: English Football Under Threat as Multiple Matches May Be Postponed

Tottenham’s Premier League match against Fulham on Wednesday is under threat after an outbreak of coronavirus at Fulham.

Fulham are the latest Premier League club to be affected by a Covid-19 outbreak after several players and staff tested positive in the latest round of testing.

The scale of the outbreak at the west London club remains unclear but it could have an impact on their game at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Wednesday night.

Outbreaks of Covid-19 threaten to cause chaos in the Premier League and the Telegraph has reported that clubs have discussed two-week break in the season amid fears coronavirus will force more matches to be called off.

The latest round of Premier League coronavirus testing found 18 people with the virus, which is the highest figure in a single round of testing since testing began in August.

As COVID-19 sweeps through the country, there are growing doubts over whether football can continue.

Manchester City’s Premier League match at Everton on Monday was postponed four hours before kick-off because of an outbreak at the club, which is also threatening their match with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

Sheffield United announced their game with Burnley on Tuesday would take place despite the club recording “numerous positives”, while Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl missed Tuesday’s game against West Ham after a member of his household tested positive.

Several matches in the EFL have also had to be called off and there are fears the FA Cup third round will be hit by multiple postponements when all clubs are tested next week.

Fulham manager Scott Parker missed their last match against Southampton on Boxing Day after a member of his household tested positive for Covid-19.

Parker self-isolated for 10 days but returned to training on Monday was due to return to the dugout against Spurs.
