The Court of Appeal in Abuja has discharged and acquitted the former Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, Justice Walter Onnoghen, who was convicted of non-declaration of assets by the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) in 2019.
A three-member panel of the Appeal Court, led by Justice Abba Mohammed ordered that his bank accounts be unfrozen with immediate effect.
It’s been five years of waiting for justice even for a former Chief law officer of Nigeria. But it happened eventually.
The Appellate Court’s verdict is based on the terms of settlement reached by Justice Walter Onnoghen’s legal team and the office of the Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi.
At the resumed sitting on Monday, Onnoghen’s lead counsel, Adegboyega Awomolo, informed the court that, in line with the court’s earlier directive, the parties had agreed to settle and had adopted the terms of settlement.
Tijjani Gazali, counsel for the Attorney General, aligned with Awomolo’s submissions and adopted the terms of settlement.
