Colorado has reported four confirmed cases of H5N1 bird flu in poultry workers, with a fifth suspected case under investigation, health authorities announced on Sunday.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirmed the four cases and is supporting further investigation into the situation. The state’s public health department stated that the fifth worker’s samples were presumptively positive at the state laboratory and have been sent to the CDC for confirmation.
While the infected workers displayed mild symptoms such as conjunctivitis and respiratory issues, none required hospitalisation. The CDC has warned that human infections with H5N1 avian flu could lead to severe disease and potentially a pandemic if the virus mutates to spread easily between people.
